Off-Page vs. On-Page SEO: What’s the Difference?

The goal of everyone who opens a website is to  rank among the top search results . They simply want users to find their brand and products when searching online, thereby increasing awareness and increasing their chances of making sales and earnings .

SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) is extremely important nowadays and remains one of the main digital marketing strategies for increasing online visibility and generating organic traffic to your website – even more so with the advent of AI and all that comes with it (but we will recommend specific articles later).

So, if you want to best position your website online, you can’t ignore a series of strategies that can be divided into two main groups: off-page vs. on-page SEO. In this article, we’ll delve deeper into these two aspects, highlighting their differences and how to implement these strategies.

1. Importance of an excellent SEO strategy

The main reason SEO is still so important is that  search engines are still the main source of web traffic . People use search engines to search for information, products, and services, and most of them don’t look beyond the top search results. Therefore, if your website doesn’t rank well in search results, you’ll lose a lot of traffic and potential customers .

Furthermore, online competition has become increasingly fierce, and  SEO is an effective way to differentiate and stand out from the competition . With a good SEO strategy, you can reach your target audience and gain a competitive advantage in your industry.

2. Differences between off-page SEO and on-page SEO

On-page SEO and off-page SEO are two important aspects that work together to improve a website’s visibility on search engines.

ON-PAGE SEO  ➡️ Let’s start with some definitions. On-page SEO focuses on creating quality website content and optimizing it for search engines. This includes researching relevant keywords, optimizing page titles, meta descriptions, header tags, text, and images for the chosen keywords. Essentially, on-page SEO involves all the elements that can be controlled directly on the website itself.

OFF-PAGE SEO ➡️ Off-page SEO, on the other hand, focuses on activities outside the website that can impact search engine rankings. This includes building high-quality backlinks from trusted and relevant websites, participating in online forums and discussions to increase user engagement, maintaining a social media presence to promote the website, and sharing content on social media. In other words, off-page SEO covers all activities that can impact a website’s authority and reputation

3. On-page SEO strategies

Let’s start with the simplest strategies to manage, the on-page ones.

3.1 Keyword research

Keyword research

Keyword research is the first phase of SEO optimization, the foundation that cannot be underestimated.

It involves identifying the words and phrases that users type into search engines when looking for information on a specific topic . Keyword research is important because it allows you to understand the most popular search terms used by users interested in a given topic and to use this information to create content that meets their needs.

Keyword research is also useful for identifying more competitive keywords that may require more time and resources to rank in search engines, as well as identifying less competitive keywords that can be used to rank in specific market niches.

To conduct effective keyword research, it is important to use specific tools such as:

  • Google Keyword Planner;
  • SEMrush;
  • Ahrefs;
  • ChatGPT, Gemini and all other Generative AI.

They allow you to identify the most relevant keywords, analyze their competition, and suggest other related keywords.

Once keywords have been identified, they can be used strategically within your website content , in titles, descriptions, and image attributes, to improve your search engine rankings.

3.2  Other vital factors for on-page SEO

We tend to think that on-page SEO is only about creating quality content (obviously written by professional SEO Copywriters ) and taking care of titles, meta descriptions, URLs , etc.

URLs must be short, relevant and contain the chosen keywords, titles and tags must be accurate, meta descriptions must be concise and relevant, providing a brief description of the page content, certainly, but this is not enough for good on-page SEO.

Do you know Core Web Vitals ?

3.2.1 The Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals  is a set of website performance metrics that Google introduced as part of its search engine optimization ranking factors.

Core Web Vitals focus on three key aspects of the user experience:

  • Largest Contentful Paint  (LCP): Measures the time it takes for the website to load the main content of the page. The goal is for LCP to occur within 2.5 seconds of the page starting to load.
  • First Input Delay  (FID): This refers to the time between the moment a user interacts with the website (for example, clicking a button) and the moment the website responds to the interaction. The FID should be less than 100 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift  (CLS): Measures the visual stability of the website while loading. The goal is for the CLS value to be less than 0.1.

Google’s goal in introducing Core Web Vitals as ranking factors is to encourage the optimization of website user experience , rewarding sites that offer a faster, more interactive, and more stable browsing experience for users. If you pay attention to these characteristics, you can say you have a well-optimized website .

Let’s move on and look at some other features you should pay attention to when creating your online site.

3.2.2 Other on-page SEO features

Website loading speed is an important SEO factor because search engines like Google consider loading speed an indicator of the overall quality of the website and the user experience. If a website takes a long time to load pages, users may abandon the site and search for information elsewhere.

Another very important factor today is the use of websites on mobile devices . A mobile-friendly website is one that has been designed to be viewed and used on mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, efficiently and user-friendly.

Over the years, the use of mobile devices to browse the Internet has grown exponentially , surpassing desktop traffic. A mobile-friendly website allows users to access and navigate the website more easily and quickly on their mobile devices, increasing traffic and improving the user experience.

Google then adopted the mobile-first index in 2018 (making it permanent in 2024), which means that the search engine uses the mobile version of a website as the primary version for indexing and ranking pages in search results . If a website isn’t mobile-friendly, it risks losing rankings in mobile search results, which can account for the majority of traffic.

3.3 Internal linking

Internal linking strategies refer to the tactics used to connect a website’s pages to each other using internal links . When you use effective internal links, you create a logical navigational structure for your website , which helps users and search engines understand how pages are connected to each other and their relative importance.

Good internal linking can help users stay longer on your website , as they can find relevant and interesting content, and it also increases the perception of authority.

To implement effective internal linking strategies, you should include them at the beginning of the paragraph, so that users can easily locate the link , “within” the main keywords, to invite readers to click on it.

Internal links should be used to connect pages with related content so users can easily find relevant information. Additionally, I recommend using a link hierarchy, where more important pages are linked to by more pages than less important ones. This will help convey their importance to search engines.

4. Off-page SEO strategies

Let’s now move on to what are known as  off-page SEO strategies , which focus on improving your website’s reputation online by increasing its authority, visibility, and popularity outside of your own webpage. These strategies are important because search engines use external signals to evaluate your website’s quality and decide its search engine rankings.

4.1 Link building

Acquiring quality links from other websites  is one of the main off-page strategies for improving your website’s ranking, and you’ve surely heard about it.

Link building is the practice of obtaining quality links from other websites that point to your website . This activity is important for SEO because search engines consider links as signals of a website’s authority and popularity . When an authority website links to you, your website will be exposed to a new audience of users, increasing your website’s visibility.

Additionally, quality links can improve your website’s ranking in search engine results pages, as search engines tend to consider links as one of the most important ranking factors .

There are several techniques for acquiring links , such as guest posting, participating in forums, creating viral content, or getting links from authority sites, but this is not the ideal place to delve into such a vast and interesting topics.

4.2 Mentions

Mentions are those links that occur when a platform mentions your website. These can be forums, online directories, sites like TripAdvisor, and the like  .

These are very useful as they increase the visibility and relevance of your website on the Internet , although they do not provide a direct benefit in terms of link building.

Mentions on various platforms can also help improve your website’s ranking in search engine results pages, as search engines consider mentions as signals of your website’s authority and relevance .

4.3 Social media

The same thing about mentions applies to social networks as well . Google indexes pages on the main social media platforms, so regular posting on these sites helps improve your site’s ranking.

Another thing to note: social media offers a lot of resonance to news, so I recommend you always create content that is easily shareable on social media to further expand your user base.

4.4 Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is extremely important for SEO , especially local SEO. We’ve already discussed it in another post.

GBP helps businesses improve their local visibility through Google search and Google Maps. Using GBP, local businesses can appear in the “3-Pack” section of local search results, which displays the top three local businesses relevant to a user’s search query .

GBP allows businesses to provide their customers with useful information , such as their address, phone number, opening hours, and more, making it easy to access relevant company information. It’s therefore a very useful and flexible tool, even for collecting user feedback.

In conclusion, both SEO techniques are important for the success of your website. On-page SEO is the foundation upon which to build your SEO strategy, while off-page SEO can help you improve your authority and online visibility. Together, on-page and off-page SEO can improve your position in Google’s SERPs and increase organic traffic to your website.
